Words from Marilee Nelson, Branch Basics Founder
I so often find that we struggle to make big changes in our lives for our health until we are faced with debilitating pain or sickness. I experienced this type of wake up call first hand and it completely altered my life for the better. At Branch Basics, we believe choices like the food we put in our bodies, the paint we put on our walls, and the cleaners and products we use around our homes have power; the power to undermine our health or to cultivate it.
Whether it was avoiding a looming kidney transplant, recovering a severely ill son that was medically deemed unrecoverable, being freed of debilitating mystery pain, overcoming long-term hormonal complications, or simply getting rid of cramps and dry eyes, our lives were transformed because of the power of eating food and using products with no harmful chemicals.
Thankfully, this process doesn’t have to be complicated. After working with children, the chronically ill, and chemically sensitive clients for over 30 years and founding Branch Basics, I can tell you first hand that the simple removal of these foods and products can make huge impacts on your health. So here are my top 3 tips to start creating a healthier home:
REMOVE ALL PESTICIDES
Pesticides and herbicides are among the most poisonous products to have in the home or garage. Multiple hazards are associated with pesticide use in the home. Low-dose, chronic exposure can negatively impact the nervous system, the respiratory system, and the reproductive system. They may be asthmagens and asthma is the #1 chronic illness of American children. They may be endocrine disruptors that can cause birth defects result in estrogen dominance, PMS, PCOS, endometriosis, and have been linked to both male and female infertility. Pesticide and herbicide exposure has been directly linked to cancer, Parkinson’s, ALS, behavior/mood issues, autism, ADD/ADHD, and other neurological conditions. It is important to remove all pesticides and herbicides from the home and garage!
Thankfully, there are effective safe alternatives. We provide a thorough process in our Home Cleanse and safe alternatives in our Pesticide Guide.
SWAP YOUR CLEANING PRODUCTS (MOST IMPORTANTLY LAUNDRY)
It’s crucial to ensure the products you are bringing into your home are safe and beneficial to your health. One of the easiest ways to immediately dramatically improve your indoor air quality is to remove toxic cleaning supplies. And I mean, actually take them out of your house. You aren’t doing yourself any favors if you just introduce new products without removing the toxic ones.
Don’t forget laundry products as you wear your clothes 24 hours a day. Think clothing, sheets, pajamas and towels - you breathe in and have skin exposure with no break or rest from exposure to the harmful chemicals that impregnate the fabric.. This is especially critical during the night since you are supposed to be resting, repairing, and rejuvenating, not detoxifying toxins from the pajamas, sheets and bedding. The bottom line is you are doing your body a major favor by switching to non-toxic fragrance free laundry products.See our Home Cleanse for a simple how to guide!
GET SOME FRESH AIR
Open your doors and windows! Just 10 minutes of fresh air can improve your indoor air quality, which has shown to bemore seriously polluted than the outdoor air in even the largest and most industrialized cities. And since most of us spend about 90% of our time indoors, even a few minutes a day with open windows can make a huge difference!
The key to improving the air quality in your home is to start where you can. The removal of pesticides and toxic cleaning products, replacing them with safe alternatives (that truly work!) and opening your windows is a great start! .
