We can all appreciate simplicity, especially when it comes to self-care or skincare. Sometimes, a 7-step skincare routine can be daunting, and sometimes we need to step up what we are already doing for better results. Turns out, our skin is a fan of simplicity just like us. All you really need are the core basics to keep your facial skin balanced and happy. Whether you need a break from too many products or you are looking to rejuvenate your skin, here are the only three actions you need to focus on:

Cleanse to Purify

The only effective way to remove buildup, dead skin cells, and impurities from your skin is by means of a cleanser. While our skin naturally cleanses itself, it needs a helping hand and water alone cannot accomplish this task. Side note: please don’t substitute makeup wipes for cleanser, either. Cleansing is so much better for your skin (and better for the planet!).

Using lukewarm water, dispense a dime-sized amount of cleanser onto your fingertip and massage together with your other fingertips to create a slight lather. Then, massage the cleanser into your facial skin making sure to use small, inward circular motions, spreading the cleanser over the entire surface area of your facial skin for at least 30 seconds. Rinse away completely after you’ve worked the cleanser into your skin thoroughly.

Tone to Balance

A toner’s main purpose is to rebalance your skin. When you wash your face using tap water from your sink or shower, your skin is exposed to harsh impurities that can absorb into the skin and bring your skin’s pH to very alkaline levels. For reference, your skin’s ideal pH is slightly acidic. The right toner has the ability to protect and remove those impurities from the skin, and adjust your skin’s pH back to its happy point.

Toning is very simple. All you need to do is hold the toner approximately 6-inches from your face and mist your entire facial area liberally. Generally, 3-4 mists will do. Allow the toner to absorb slightly until your face is dewy before proceeding to moisturize (this helps your moisturizer absorb better).

No need for a cotton ball or to tap the toner in with your fingers. Natural absorption is best. Avoid toners that use alcohol or astringents because you do not want to force your pores closed and trap impurities under your skin.

Moisturize to Replenish

The reason moisturizing is crucial is that this is the only way to replenish what your skin has lost after you’ve cleansed. When you cleanse, it’s inevitable that you’re going to lose some of your skin’s natural oils. This is why we moisturize after cleansing because we are replenishing that moisture in order to help protect our skin and not compromise its barrier.

Beginning with clean hands and clean skin, dispense a pea-sized amount of product to massage over your facial skin and neck. Pump the product into one of your fingertips, join your fingertip together with your other hand and massage the product a bit. Dot the moisturizer onto your skin in sections, preferably your temples, cheeks, chin, and nose. Work the moisturizer into your skin using gentle motions until it has been fully absorbed.
