How To Cleanse Your Face Properly

One of the most important practices for a clear, congestion-free complexion is properly cleansing your face and neck. The duration, the product, and even the water temperature play a role in how effectively you’re cleansing your face. Make a point to do these things to ensure you’re cleansing your face properly. And use a non-detergent soap based cleanser. There is an enormous amount of misinformation on this. For instance, Soap is the best way to cleanse your face, providing of course it is pH adjusted to match the pH of your skin, typically around a pH of 6. Read the ingredients of your cleanser to be sure it doesn’t have synthetic foaming agents, glycerine or alcohol, just to name a few. Mostly if there are ingredients with long names you don’t understand it’s a synthetic detergent and not at all healthy for your skin. Your body. Or our planet.

Start with a makeup-free face

If you remove your makeup before cleansing your face, this makes it easier for your cleanser to get deeper into your pores, more effectively removing dirt and grime that’s settled into them. Don’t use a makeup wipe, though, because wipes just smear makeup across your face and drive dirt deeper into your pores.

Use the right water temperature

Water temperature plays a factor into how your facial skin responds to cleansing. If the water you’re using is too hot, then your skin will become dry and agitated. If you use water that is too cold, the cold water won’t absorb as well into your pores to lift away the debris that is clogging your them. Always opt for warm water to cleanse your face (and for showering in general).

Spend adequate time cleansing your face

Plan to spend at least 40-60 seconds cleansing your face, depending on how long it takes you to work up a lather and massage the cleanser into your entire face and neck area. 


We are constantly generating new skin cells, and sometimes our skin needs help shedding the spent cells. This is where exfoliation comes into play. By using a non-abrasive exfoliant, you can remove dead skin cells which helps keep your skin free of congestion and excess oil. Do this at least once per week.

Don’t use a dirty or scratchy towel

When cleansing, do not scrub your face with a towel. This can cause raw skin that quickly becomes agitated. Clean fingers are all you need to clean your face. When patting skin dry, make sure you have a fresh towel on hand. When water comes into contact with something, bacteria begins to grow which can lead to breakouts on your face.

Consider double cleansing

Depending on your skin type, you might consider double cleansing. This involves starting with an oil cleanser that works its way more deeply into your skin than soap or lotion based cleansers. Once you’ve finished, follow up with a traditional cleanser to remove any leftover dirt. 

Cleanse Often Enough

Generally, we need to cleanse our face and neck twice a day. Once in the morning, and once in the evening. If you have extremely sensitive or acne prone skin, you might find it necessary to cleanse after a really sweaty workout to keep your skin free of bacteria that causes breakouts.

Lock in the benefits with a toner and moisturizer

Immediately after your skin comes into contact with tap water, be sure to spray your face with a pH balancing toner. Then, lock in hydration with a moisturizer to prevent your skin from becoming dry.
